Practice Structure

  • An experienced and highly motivated practice providing a wide range of complimentary surveying services to businesses, public bodies and private individuals in Dumfries & Galloway and throughout South West Scotland.

The Partners and Principal Staff


Partners

  • The founding partners, Matt Rodger and Alex Brockie, retired in 1990 and 1993 and the partnership was continued by Douglas Owen and Robert Richmond. In 2004 they were joined in the partnership by Nicoll Milne and Graeme Irving.
  • Douglas Owen F.R.I.C.S. joined the firm from another local practice in 1982, becoming an Associate in 1986 and a Partner in 1988. He took a diploma in Quantity Surveying in Glasgow College of Building in 1977 and qualified as an Associate of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in 1981 becoming a Fellow in 1995. Douglas is also the Partner in Charge at the Stranraer Office.
  • Robert Richmond B.Sc., F.R.I.C.S. came to the firm in 1989 after some years with the Property Services Agency becoming an Associate in 1990 and a Partner in 1993. He took an honours degree in Building at Heriot Watt University, graduating in 1977, and qualified as an Associate of the R.I.C.S. in 1980 becoming a Fellow in 1992. In 1993 he obtained membership of the General Practice Division of the R.I.C.S. and now holds dual membership of both Quantity Surveying and General Practice Divisions. From 2000 to 2002 he served as Chairman of the local branch of the R.I.C.S. and is the local representative on the R.I.C.S. in Scotland Dispute Resolution Faculty Board. Robert is the firms Quality Partner but all the Partners are committed to a process of constant review and improvement of the firms performance and to providing a highly professional service to our clients.
  • Graeme Irving B.Sc., M.R.I.C.S. joined the firm in 1999 following our merger with W.B. Irving. He joined the firm of W.B. Irving in 1988 and combined his work with part-time study at Glasgow Caledonian University where he graduated BSc (Hons) in 1997. He qualified as an Associate of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors in 1998. He has acted as Quality Manager for W.B. Irving since 1995. Graeme has considerable experience in design and build projects and is currently studying for a post graduate qualification in Project Management.
  • Nicoll M Milne Dip QS M.R.I.C.S. came to the firm in 2003 after some twenty five years with Robison & Davidson Ltd a construction company with an annual turnover in excess of 45 million. He was awarded a Diploma in Quantity Surveying from the College of Estate Management in 1993 and qualified as an Associate of the R.I.C.S. in 1995 and is a member of the Construction, Building Surveying and Planning and Development Faculties. He has served as the Honorary Treasurer to the local branch of the R.I.C.S and is currently a member of the committee. Building on a sound professional and technical background Nicoll has a broad understanding and experience of the structure of a building company from ”grass roots” to Director level. His area of expertise includes Contracts Management and Design & Build Contracting Nicoll is accustomed to leading multi-disciplinary teams to meet tight project deadlines and budgets.

 

Senior Surveyors

  • Ronnie Faill, our Stranraer Office Manager, joined the firm in 1999 and has set up and managed our branch office in Stranraer. He has worked as a Quantity Surveyor since joining the profession in a private practice in 1970. He worked for many years in the Stranraer area and has extensive experience in providing quantity surveying services to our clients. In 1995, after a period of training he became a member of the Association of Planning Supervisors.
  • Ken Paterson F.R.I.C.S. has recently joined the firm and is based in our Stranraer Office. Following completion of distance learning study, he was elected Associate of RICS in 1985 becoming a Fellow in 1996. A native of Stranraer, he spent some 23 years in private practice covering all aspects of surveying before moving to the public sector. In the last 8 years, he has been employed as Contractor's Surveyor/Estimator and latterly Building Maintenance Manager of a works unit comprising around 70 operatives delivering a responsive repairs and maintenance service in housing and public buildings.

 

Quality Manager/Dumfries Office Manager

  • Barbara Crawford joined the firm in 1976 as a typist becoming senior secretary and office manageress in 1993. She took a Scottish Business Certificate in Secretarial Studies at Dumfries and Galloway Technical College in 1975. In 1997 she completed a course of training in quality systems and, in collaboration with Robert Richmond, the firm's quality partner, set up the quality system, becoming Quality Manager and one of our internal auditors. The firms quality system has had very favourable reports at each of our external audits.

 

Quality Assurance

  • The practice achieved accreditation to BS EN ISO 9002:1994 in 1997. The logical next step for us was to seek registration to the new standard ISO 9001:2000 and in June 2003 this was achieved.
  • We are committed to comply with the requirements of IS0 9001:2000 and to continually improve the effectiveness of the Quality Management System.
  • External audits are carried out annually by National Quality Assurance (NQA) Certificate No. 8688.
  • Internal Audits are carried out every 6 months by our Quality Manager and by one of the Partners. Both have certificated training as internal auditors.
  • The Partners actively promote quality issues and fully support the Quality Manager.
  • The Quality System is under continual review and staff suggestions which improve the firms service delivery to clients are encouraged.


Professional Indemnity Insurance

  • The Practice carries professional indemnity insurance covering all our work areas.
